Original antique map of the 'New searoute from Europe to Siberia' by August Petermann from Justus Perthes publishing house, depicting the expedition of Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, the first man who sailed through the long-sought Northeast Passage. The map depicts the route of his earlier successful 3 months long arctic expedition Vega, executed in 1875 in hopes to find a new trade way from Europe to Siberia. Nordenskiöld sailed along the Nordkapp to the Nowaya Zemlya, and then across the and Kara Sea to the delta of the Jenisei river in Siberia. He then continued upstream in a boat all the way to Krasnojarsk, from where he returned back to Europe on land via Tomsk, Jekaterinburg, Kasan, Moscow and St. Petersburg.
