These atlases have one thing in common. They remind its readers that the Earth is not flat and rectangular, which one may forget using only traditional atlases with world maps based on the Mercator's projection. The rise of these atlases was fuelled by progress made in the air travel in 1940's, enabling people to travel over regions where no ship would possibly travel, bringing new routes around the globe and cutting distances between the world powers. Many of these atlases have an underlying mission to explain the dangers of relative proximity in the world with planes. The most common feature of these atlases is their use of ortogrpahic projections in the maps.
