German Hand-Atlases were the pinnacle of atlas production from the beginning of 19th century to the 1940's. The German sense for detail and scientific precision are very obvious here, surpassing other atlases in most aspects. Although often very expensive, the main atlas families like the Stielers, Andrees, Meyers, Sohr-Berghaus, Debes were leading the market not only in Germany, but their translated versions became very popular in most of other European countries and were well known around the whole world. Today, German Hand-Atlases, especially those in good condition, are very sought after by many collectors.
