Tabula Generalis Marchionatus Moraviae in Sex Circulos Divisae quos Mandato Caesaro Acuratie Emenfus hac Mappa Delineatos Exhibitet Ioh. Christoph. Müller S.C.M. Capitan, Editore Ioh. Bapt. Homanno, Noriberge

This 18th-century map of Moravia, Tabula Generalis Marchionatus Moraviae, is a remarkable example of early modern cartography. It was created by Johann Christoph Müller and later published by Johann Baptist Homann in 1720. The map meticulously divides Moravia into six administrative districts, each outlined in a distinct color. These regions—Brněnský kraj, Olomoucký kraj, Znojemský kraj , Jihlavský kraj, Přerovský kraj, and Hradišťský kraj—reflect the political organization of the time. Settlements, rivers, mountains, and significant roads are all carefully depicted, with red dots marking important towns or fortified locations. The level of detail reflects the precision and effort that Müller, an Austrian military cartographer, dedicated to surveying the region.

The historical context of this map is closely tied to Habsburg administrative reforms. In 1708, the Viennese court ordered the creation of a new, more accurate map of Moravia to improve governance and military strategy. Johann Christoph Müller undertook extensive field surveys, sending drafts to regional officials for review before finalizing his work. The engraving of the copper plates was completed by Johann Christoph Leidig in 1716. Homann, a leading German cartographer and publisher, later adapted Müller’s map into a single-sheet administrative representation, making it more accessible and widely circulated. Due to its popularity, the map saw multiple reprints, with later impressions showing signs of wear on the printing plates.

A striking feature of the map is its grand title cartouche, located in the upper-left corner. This decorative panel, typical of Baroque map design, is richly adorned with allegorical figures. Pallas Athena, the goddess of wisdom, represents strategic governance, while Mars, the god of war, symbolizes strength and protection. Hermes, the messenger of the gods, alludes to commerce and communication, and Diana, the goddess of the hunt, highlights Moravia’s natural resources. The inclusion of grapes, fish, and minerals further underscores the economic prosperity of the region, emphasizing its viticulture, fishing industry, and mineral wealth.

In the lower-left corner, the scale of measurement is seamlessly integrated into a vignette depicting various aspects of Moravian life. A scene of vineyards, a shepherd tending his flock, and a hunter pursuing his prey reflect the agricultural and rural economy that sustained the region. These artistic flourishes add to the map’s visual appeal while also providing insight into the livelihoods of its inhabitants.

This map represents a major advancement in the cartographic depiction of Moravia. Before Müller’s efforts, maps of the region were often outdated and lacked precision. His surveys laid the groundwork for more accurate mapping, influencing later cartographers well into the 19th century. Homann’s edition, with its artistic embellishments and clear administrative divisions, became an essential reference for both governance and education. Today, Tabula Generalis Marchionatus Moraviae is highly valued by collectors and historians, not only for its geographic accuracy but also for its artistic beauty and historical significance.
