Full title

This map, attributed to the renowned educational reformer and cartographer John Amos Comenius, is a remarkable historical artefact that captures the geography of Moravia (part of modern Czech Republic) with meticulous detail and artistry. Created in the early 17th century, during the height of the cartographic revolution and a time of political and religious upheaval in Europe, this map represents a fusion of scientific accuracy, artistic expression, and practical utility.

Comenius, known primarily for his groundbreaking work in pedagogy, was also an accomplished cartographer who approached map-making with the same dedication to clarity and systematic order that defined his educational theories. It is believed Comenius himself participated in the surveys that lead to making this map.

The legend of the map, elegantly displayed in the decorative cartouche in the second image, is a masterpiece of its own. It provides an insightful explanation of the various symbols used throughout the map, showcasing Comenius's attention to detail and his commitment to making the map user-friendly. The symbols denote walled cities ("Urbs muris cincta"), towns ("Oppidum"), fortified villages ("Pagus turritus"), castles ("Arx, Zámek"), small fortresses ("Castellum Turz"), unnamed villages, monasteries, vineyards, thermal or medicinal springs, glass workshops ("Officinae vitriae"), and sites of gold and silver mines, as well as iron ore mines. This rich array of information paints a vivid picture of Moravia's economic and social structure, highlighting the region's wealth in natural resources, craftsmanship, and monastic life.

The precision of this map, including the meticulously and accurately portrayed terrain was unprecedented, and had not been surpassed for more than a hundred years.
