A Curious yet Authentic Plan setting forth the Principal Highways and Romantic Places of the Country

Original pictorial map of Scotland, created by A.E. Taylor and published by Esso, the company selling petrol, to promote auto tourism which was on the rise since the beginning of the 20th century, fuelled by increasing number of cars available in the public and good conditions of the roads. Besides containing plenty of illustrations of the tourist attractions, some of the places are accompanied by short poems or quotes by famous people or literary characters (like Macbeth, Burns, Tam O'Shanter, Scott, Hardyng and more), referencing or praising the location. The cartouche is finely decorated with Scottish cities coats of arms, and the map is augmented with unusually highly decorative wind rose and scale. On the bottom sides, one can two small inset maps - "The Plan of the Land of Burns", outlined by illustration of Glasgow and Scottish warriors and people in local costumes, and "A Plan of the Land of Scott", outlined by illustration of the City of Edinburgh and also typical Sottish figures. Short poem by James Hogg (1770 – 1835), a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English, is written on the bottom center.
