This map, published as a supplement to the Atlas of Cuba, was designed by Gerardo Canet in collaboration with Erwin Raisz, the creator of the innovative landform map technique. This method masterfully portrays the actual topography of the terrain, using shaded relief and intricate details to highlight Cuba’s mountains, valleys, and plains, such as the Sierra Maestra and Escambray Mountains. The map also incorporates a color scheme to indicate how the land is utilized, distinguishing agricultural areas, forests, and urban zones.
The lower section of the map includes a series of insets that depict the different types of landscapes found across Cuba. These vignettes showcase the island's diverse environments, such as coastal regions, fertile plains, and tropical forests, as well as its characteristic vegetation and land use practices. These illustrations provide a vivid and educational view of Cuba’s varied ecological and cultural settings.
A prominent feature of the map is the detailed inset of Havana and its surrounding areas in the upper right corner. This inset emphasizes the urban layout, infrastructure, and historical significance of the capital city, offering a closer look at its importance within the island’s geographic and cultural context.
By combining scientific accuracy with artistic expression, this map serves as a comprehensive geographical guide and a cultural artifact, reflecting mid-20th-century Cuba’s natural and human landscapes.
