Original pictorial map of Heidelberg, a city in the German state of Baden-Württemberg on the river Neckar. The very creative way of drawing labels which Leo Faller used in this map is what makes this map special. The labels are drawn as ribbons, flying in the wind on one side while firmly attached to the landmarks on the other side. One notable feature is the 'Feierstätte' (after WW2 renamed to Thingstätte) in the lower left quarter. It is a monumental open-air stage built for Nazi gatherings and opened by Joseph Goebbels 2 years prior to publishing of this map in 1935. This construction is also pictured on the Riemer's persuasive pictorial map of Germany called 'Germany, the Beautiful Travel Country'. The map is oriented with North on the bottom.
Leo Eduard Faller was born in April 19, 1902 in Freiburg, Germany. After his studies of carpentry and interior design, Faller deepened his artistic education in State academy of fine arts in Karlsruhe. In mid-1930s Faller begun to work as a commercial artist mainly working on brochures and illustrations of german railway network. After the Second World War, in which Faller served as a soldier in Russia, Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) and the Baden State Transport company became his most important clients. In addition, he illustrated children's books written by himself, his wife and others. Leo Faller died in December 15, 1969 in Karslruhe. In 1972, the Leo-Faller-Strasse in Daxladen, the city where he lived, was named after him.
