Westermann Bildkarten Lexikon is divided into continents as self-contained wholes. In each of these chapters, a comprehensive overview first introduces the spatial, natural and economic connections. The geographical-physical maps of the individual parts of the world are followed by picture maps of the same scale, each of which shows a specific area of the same living space as a section: the animal and plant world, peoples and cultures, economy and traffic. Each pictorial map has its own simplified index map on the opposite page, enabling the reader identifying the portrayed features.
Corresponding to the three-part structure of the overall picture card lexicon, the alphabetical order of the explanations follows, which covers all the important details of the material and illustrates them with many colored illustrations. The lexicon therefore has several individual alphabets in which things that belong together are listed together. The connection between them is created by the overall index with its clear references, through which you can look up every term covered regardless of its chapter division. The final register is therefore the guide for those who are looking for the details.
The pictorial maps, designed by Wilhelm Eigener and August Eigener, were highly popular in 2nd half of 20th century and were often found as large-scale wall maps hanging in classrooms and children's rooms. The wall maps were produced in several sizes - 95x125 cm, 140x170 cm. The largest map produced by Westermann publishing house was the pictorial map of the World (190x130 cm).
