The Allgemeiner Zoologischer Atlas by Heinrich Berghaus belongs to the six-volume series that makes up the complete first edition of Berghaus' groundbreaking Physikalischer Atlas - first ever thematic atlas. Published in the mid-19th century, this atlas reflects the era’s growing interest in the relationship between physical geography and the distribution of natural phenomena, including flora and fauna.
The Zoological Atlas specifically focuses on zoology and zoogeography, presenting 12 plates, which include 10 double page maps and a 2 statistical charts. These maps illustrate the global distribution of animal species, linking their habitats to the physical geography of the world.
One of the most striking features of this atlas is its use of a vertical profile diagrams pioneered by Alexander von Humboldt, that depict the altitudinal ranges of various species, effectively visualizing how animal life varies with elevation in different parts of the world. This innovative approach was among the earliest attempts to integrate biological and geographical data, reflecting the influence of Humboldt’s Naturgemälde, a work that emphasized the interconnectedness of natural systems.
In addition to its scientific utility, the atlas is visually engaging. Many maps are complemented by detailed illustrations of the featured species, serving both as an educational tool and as a testament to the artistic standards of 19th-century scientific publications.
The atlas also includes a comprehensive text section, which provides additional context and explanation for the maps.
Cover soiled and edges rubbed, maps in generally good condition with foxing and yellowing as to be expected. One map has a crease and small closed tear confined to the margin (see photos).
