The Forestry and Gamekeeping Atlas, published by the Czechoslovakian Geodesy and Cartography Institute in 1956, is a thematic atlas that reflects the significance of forestry in the socialist economy of the 1950s. Forestry played a crucial role not only in supporting various industries but also in landscape water retention and human health. The atlas shares the loose-leaf format of the Historical Atlas of the Revolutionary Movement, where map sheets are placed in a three-flap cardboard folder covered with fabric.
Approximately half of the atlas is dedicated to maps covering forestry and gamekeeping in the Czechoslovakian region. The first half extends well beyond forestry, incorporating maps related to hydrography, climate, geology, and the history of forestry in the Czech lands. The second half of the atlas features maps depicting various regions worldwide, emphasizing the distribution of tree and wildlife species. It also provides detailed mapping of the most important forest regions in Europe and globally, with special focus on regions under Soviet influence, such as Hungary, Romania, Poland, Albania, and the USSR.
The atlas comprises 120 pages of maps distributed across 40 loose sheets. The accompanying text volume, spanning 91 pages, supplements the maps with detailed information and includes additional maps and charts. The map index is compiled in Czech, Russian, and English.
The Forestry and Gamekeeping Atlas is considered a significant and unprecedented work, summarizing both modern and historical knowledge in the fields of forestry and gamekeeping. Its impact extends well beyond forestry and gamekeeping, and was used by many professionals from agriculture, water management, natural sciences, manufacturing industry, education and other sectors.
